BRINDARICA BOSE, Artist, Switzerland

Why do I paint?

Because, when I hold a brush, I feel like I am flying in the air. And when I dip it in colours, the paper becomes my magic carpet! Check out my art blogs below.

Artist Brinda

Brindarica Bose (Brinda) is a Swiss artist of Indian origin, living in Wohlen, Switzerland. She is an art teacher and a professional artist. She has been learning art since her childhood with various teachers, but never really went to an art college. Brinda is a watercolourist and a passionate urban sketcher, and she loves vibrant colours! She has exhibited her paintings internationally and has been a lecturer at Swiss Urbansketchers Symposiums in 2021 and 2022. She has been teaching art for the last two decades, after she finished a Masters in Fine Arts with Bangiya Sahitya Parishad in India, which encompasses theory and practical exams over a course of seven years, which she completed along with her studies. Constant practice and learning are a must. Brinda is an art teacher at Migros Klubschule since 2015, gives monthly online watercolour classes and teaches every Tuesday evening in Wohlen AG. She shares the joy of art with refugees and underprivileged children under her project ‘Artists beyond border’ with Wohler Integrationsamt and with Robin Hoods Academy, Ranchi, India. Brinda has a versatile art style. She can paint realistic as well as abstract paintings and is equally skilled in oil, mixed media, and acrylics. But her favourite medium is watercolours. She also loves painting Swiss landscapes, and canvases based on Indian mythology.

In India, Brinda won (first rank) in two state-level art competitions, and got first or second rank in ~60 district level art competitions. In 2023, her painting got selected in the top 16 women artists collection by Syracruse, NY; and also got included in the international watercolour magazine ‘Splash’ summer edition, 2023 as a finalist. Her global exhibitions include: 1995- 2000: Annual Art Exhibition with Akanksha Group, India; 2011: Solo Exhibition in Dietikon, Gemeindebibliothek; 2017: International Art Exhibition, Basel; 2017: Solo Exhibition in Wohlen Strohmuseum; 2018: Art Exhibition in Brazil, UAE and India; 2019: Fabriano Art Expo, Italy; 2019-21: Urbansketchers Exhibition, Kunst Schau in Gluri Sutter Huus, Wettingen; 2020, 2023: Group exhibition in Zürich Hauptbahnhof; 2021: Urbansketching demo at Sommerbar Fest, Wohlen. In April 2023, she also won the ‘Woman of Excellence Award’ for fine arts and culture, in India.

Urbansketches

Urbansketching is when you paint on the spot (outdoors or indoors). I carry a sketchbook, few colour pencils and a black pen all the time in my tote bag. Whenever I get some time, I make it a point to urbansketch. This includes family outings, ski holidays and sketchscrawls. I try to draw on paper and use a wooden pencil. In 2020 and in 2021, I also conducted workshops at the Swiss Urbansketchers Symposium.

Cityscapes

Cityscapes, are paintings and sketches from my travels around the world. You will find sketches that I did inside the plane on my way to New York, paintings that I did while sitting on the snow at -7 degrees in the Swiss Alps, to paintings that I did on the streets of Sevilla in the peak of summer at 40 degrees!

Food Sketching

Food sketching (still life). Sugar free donuts for your visual appetite. Colours are appetising! These paintings are with watercolours and color pencils. There are many more, as I love painting still life of food and household products. Best part is these donuts will not add up to your calories :-)!

Indian Folk Art

Indian folk art based on mythology. I love to read the Upanishads, Vedas, Gita, and old texts based on Indian mythology and paint based on that. My focus is mostly on women characters like Sita, Droupadi, Radha, Durga and Devis in different forms. These are all original depictions based on my own interpretation from the ancient texts that I love to read.

Landscapes

Landscapes are best drawn en plein air. I often paint outdoors when the weather is good. But if I am travelling for work or with family, then I mostly take photographs and paint them at home. I also like to paint landscapes in big canvases, specially the Swiss Alps!

People and Portraits

I paint realistic portraits as well as from imagination - based on a concept specially on full moon nights (joking!). I love expressive faces, and during my college days, I had sketched all my classmates with pencil, each in 30 minutes. Portrait sketching is quite challenging, as just a miniscule change can alter the face! Lately, I like to paint people with expressions, or use a human face against a backdrop which expresses a concept. Once again, my paintings feature mostly women.

Pencil Sketches

Pencil sketches can give you the freedom that no other medium can, plus it’s practical and easy to carry just a wooden pencil and a few papers in your bag wherever you go. If you can draw correctly, your paintings shall automatically have more strength. Hence, to keep drawing, to keep practising freehand drawing is a must. Once you master the concepts of composition, light and shade, and perspective, sketches can turn into beautiful paintings, or become standalone pieces of art. Especially when I am on vacations, I carry with me a horizontal sketchpad and a set of waterproof black pens.

General

General

General theme paintings. I am quite temperamental and prefer to be versatile, rather than narrow down my paintings into one or two topics only. I can paint oranges on a Monday, a portrait on a Tuesday, a landscape on a Wednesday, an abstract on a Thursday, a mixed media canvas with acrylics on a Friday, and urbansketch on weekends. I believe if you are creative, you can experiment in a broad range. Experiment, experience and express has always been my motto in art. One needs patience and diligence to grow with art. Once you give this, and practice diligently with full passion, you will yourself see the results. Remarks from your peers and friends will confirm this as well, when they see your progress in art.
